The beginnings of Cooper date back to 1914 in Akron, Ohio, when two brothers-in-law John F. Schaefer and Claude E. Hart formed a company to produce tire patches, tire cement, and tire repair kits. In 1915, Schaefer and Hart purchased The Giant Tire & Rubber Company of Akron, a tire rebuilding business, and shortly thereafter moved the business to Findlay, Ohio.
In 1926, Ira. J. Cooper developed the “Cooper Creed” which focused the company on providing “good merchandise, fair play, and a square deal.” The vision of Ira J. Cooper continues at Cooper today.
At Cooper, we believe that manufacturing a quality product is key to ensuring your peace of mind. All Cooper® tires are backed by a standard or premium limited warranty, and select products are also backed by a 45-day road test or mileage warranty, helping to give you peace of mind on the road.
Cooper traces its roots back to Akron, Ohio when in 1914 two brother-in-laws purchased the M&M Company, a company which made tire patches and repair kits. The owners then purchased the Giant Tire & Rubber Company to make “rebuilt” tires and moved the business to Findlay, Ohio, in 1917. Another investor, I.J. Cooper, established The Cooper Corporation in 1919 on an adjacent property for manufacturing new tires. These two companies merged with The Falls Rubber Company in 1930 and formed The Master Tire & Rubber Company. In 1946, the company’s name was changed to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company and in 1960 the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Today, Cooper is the eighth largest tire manufacturer in the world and is among the 350 largest companies in America. Cooper remains one of only two American-owned tire companies.
Cooper’s vision is “One company, one team, one goal: Creating superior value for our customers, employees, partners, and shareholders.” Cooper focuses on The Cooper Way, which involves, “Engaged people, relentless improvement, and excellence in all we do.” The Cooper Way also includes: “help each other succeed, have engaged communication, do the right thing, be agile, be results focused, and provide world-class customer service.”
Cooper offers its customers the Cooper Advantage. For more than eight decades, good merchandise, fair play and a square deal have been the pillars of Cooper’s business. Cooper never leaves three key ingredients out of anything they produce: Passion, Precision, and Performance. They also use Vtech, Virtual Tire Technology, their state-of-the-art computer-aided engineering modeling system, which allows them to predict tire performance.
